Are you thinking about joining a college esports team? Trying to figure out what games colleges offer?
Here is a list to get you started:
League of Legends, Rainbow 6: Siege, Valorant, Halo Infinite, Rocket League, Overwatch 2
League of Legends
This game has a huge backing and a professional league producing viewer counts higher than many traditional sports. LoL is a leader in developing the collegiate esports that we know and love today and one of the first to offer full ride scholarships at many schools. League of Legends is also very low when it comes to the required specifications on PCs. With it's low cost for entry and a professional scene unlike any comparable game, this free-to-play has a path to the peak for anyone out to make a name for themselves in esports. Hit the rift and compete in the modern day chess that is League of Legends!
Don't you dare blink as you peak the corner, it's Rainbow 6: Siege! This game is a thrill for first-person shooter fans and has held a firm place in the collegiate esports arena for years and will continue for years to come. This game rewards both the team players and the lone wolf on offensive and defensive rounds require players to succeed at both attacking and defending to pull out the win.
This game is a more recent addition and has exploded onto the esports scene. Often called the child of Overwatch and CS:GO, Valorant offers a variety of agents to choose, master, and utilize to dominate your opponents. Big name teams are currently bidding for a seat at the table as the pro league develops at Riot Games. The collegiate scene is following and the prize pools for this game are rapidly growing.
Halo dropped the next game in it's long series and while it's still trying to stand up on its own two feet, the history of the game has propelled it forward. It has a more classic competitive approach, and with the initial launch of the championship series, and of course, backed by Microsoft, this one will most likely be here to stay. Loads of updates to the game have dropped already and plenty more have been promised, so keep a close eye on this one!
This game is just an all out classic. It combines some of the aspects of traditional sports with incredible mechanics and a fun environment. It only takes a squad of 3 to launch this free-to-play game. It's both fun to watch and fun to play. This game will be a staple of the collegiate esports scene for a long time. One big benefit is that this game is truly cross platform with little to no competitive advantage between console or PC. Pick up a controller and we will see you at kickoff!
This teamwork focused game pits players against one another in a 5v5 randomly picked objective match on one of its futuristic takes of popular locations around the globe and even the moon. The professional league for this game continues to grow and the collegiate scene is sure to follow and continue it's journey from Overwatch: 1.
